Life Issues
We all experience stressful times in our lives and it is important to try to resolve these difficulties before they mount up and engulf the enjoyment and functioning in our normal daily lives.
Life issues which can be rooted deep in the past can affect our self esteem and anxiety levels in the present. They can result in a lack of confidence and lead to relationship difficulties and problems relating to our self-fulfilment and personal identity.
If untreated, a build up of stresses can cause depression which can negatively affect professional life and can even lead to divorce or physical symptoms.
Grief
Whilst grief is normally associated with mourning the loss of a loved or close person, it can often manifest as a physical as well as a mental pain. The pain can vary from a deep feeling of sorrow affecting our general level of wellbeing to a sensation of being overwhelmed by an unbearable level of discomfort or distress.
Grief can affect us in many ways. It can leave us with a heavy heart and feelings of regret and sorrow, but it can also result in bodily pain and it is important to recognise this, often unacknowledged, aspect of grief.
The causes of our grief are many, but some of the main reasons are the loss of a relative or a friend, or the loss of a life we thought we were expecting to lead, perhaps resulting from a death in the family, a divorce, the loss of a job, of the death of a treasured pet.
From time to time in our lives we also suffer anticipatory mourning where we are anticipating an impending loss. The psychological and physical effects of anticipatory mourning can be very powerful and affect our daily lives.
I am specialised in the study of the effects of grief and can offer help in understanding the impact of grief on our daily lives. In addressing this I work with clients to help acknowledge the many and diverse effects that their grief can have on their behaviour and different areas of life. Our sessions would include working through the grieving process in a supportive and safe environment.
Supervision
As an accredited UKCP Psychotherapist, I have an understanding of the rigorous requirements necessary in order to become UKCP registered. I have more than 10 years successful experience in providing supervision for students engaged in the accreditation process.
We will focus on bringing out the best in your work with your clients and examine alternative strategies to help your psychotherapeutic relationship with those clients. Whilst my approach is integrative and draws largely upon existential and psychodynamic theory and methodology, I appreciate that my supervisees often use different approaches.
